The Keeper of the Crystal was a Maris woman and the leader of the Maris people before Doss was appointed Keeper by Rowan of Rin. She was appointed Keeper by Jiller's grandmother when she was only 15.[1]

History[]

The Keeper was chosen by Jiller's grandmother, her father's mother, who was only 15 years old at the time.[1]

Rowan and the Keeper of the Crystal[]

Physical appearance[]

Like other Maris, the Keeper had blue-white skin. When Rowan the weakened, dying Keeper in the Cavern of the Crystal, she was so faded, thin and shrunken, and her delicate skin so fine and pale, that it was difficult to see her clearly against the background of her chair in the Cavern. She did not look old as people of Rin looked old, and was not wrinkled, but Rowan knew at once that he had never seen a living creature so ancient. The Keeper, and the webs between the fingers of her tiny hands, seemed almost transparent. Her eyes were huge in her tiny face and "seemed to speak of the wisdom and the knowledge of ages, and, above all, of a terrible yearning for rest." They seemed to convey that she had seen many things, known many things, but that she was now immensely tired and wished to die.[1]
