Chronological and political information
First appearance

The Golden Door

Joliffe was a citizen of Weld. He was the only person left in his family when his mother, father, sister and grandmother died from a skimmer attack. Joliffe was a good friend of Dirk and Sholto. Beyond the golden Door, Joliffe had died in the Fell Zone and had been laid to rest by Dirk.[1]

History[]

Like every other person who grew up in the city of Weld before the breaking of the Wall, Joliffe wrongly believed the story of how the Sorcerer Dann, after founding the city, had entrusted its ruling to his close friend, the first Warden of Weld. In reality Dann had been betrayed by this "friend".

Joliffe was a close friend of the brothers Dirk and Sholto. However, though they were friends, Joliffe would often make snide comments at the expense of, sneer at or appear annoyed by Sholto. This, Dirk and Sholto's younger brother, Rye, theorised could be because Joliffe might have been jealous of Dirk's loyalty to Sholto.

The Golden Door[]

Joliffe met up with Dirk, Sholto and Rye in the fifth year of the skimmer attacks, after another night of attacks. The three met him at his home, and then together marched to the square where they learned that the Warden was looking for volunteers to go beyond Weld. Joliffe believed the Warden was a "pompous fool", as did Dirk and Sholto, so the three, along with another of their friends, Crell, immediately decided that they would sign up the next day. This was despite Rye's protests, as he feared they might die outside the Wall.

After agreeing to become Volunteers, Joliffe and Crell made for the tavern to drink on their success. The next day, Joliffe, Dirk and Crell went to the Keep of Weld to sign up. Crell eventually returned and did not go beyond Weld. Joliffe and Dirk however went through the golden Door. Out there, in the Fell Zone Joliffe died from an unknown cause, after which Dirk buried him. About one year later, Rye found Joliffe's grave in the Fell Zone, when he himself left Weld as a Volunteer to seek his brothers who had been declared lost.[1]
